WHAT HAVE YOU PROMISED YOURSELF? “HE IS A PROMISING CHILD”, MY TEACHER’S COMMENT THAT MADE ME PURSUE EXCELLENCE BY MASTERPIECE DAVID OLAWADE

It began with a tireless pursuit for academic excellence as a primary school lad. I always desired to have the gift my father promised me if I emerge as the best student. He promised me a bicycle while I promised him a first position. He fulfilled his promise after I was the best student in the class consecutively. I fulfilled my promise before his.

The consecutive and consistent track record of my excellent results warranted me to have a double promotion from primary four to primary six with an option to write the primary school leaving certificate exams (common entrance). My performance in the class exams and the external exams made me to also be among the first five best student in my new class.

After the whole razz matazz of the graduation ceremony and encouragement from my class teacher, I longed to check my report dossier for her comment. Her comment gave me the first quantum leap for being an excellent enthusiast. She wrote ” He is a promising Child”.

After reading her comment, several thoughts ran through my mind, as I imagined; “I only promised my parents to always have an excellent result, I never promised Anty”. I said to myself “David! enough of promising others, promise yourself something that is worth pursuing”.

At that scene, I made a promise to myself to be the best student all through my time in the secondary school and I concluded that nothing would make me breach this promise come what may. I knew it would be hard work, I knew there are other students I would meet over there that may be better than me but like it is been said “promise is a debt”, I never wanted to be a debtor.

OUR PERSPECTIVES ARE DIFFERENT.

Other intending students would be thinking of wearing and rocking their new secondary school uniform but I had a total different focus of going to the secondary school. I saw beyond the new uniform to a new promise of being the overall best student every term all through my time there.

Some where thinking of competing with me in the class while I was thinking of competing with the whole student in the school. I imagined myself coming forth majestically with my parents applauding me as I receive the award every year as the overall best student. I could imagine the proprietor of the school and chairman during  the speech, prize and valedictory ceremony calling my name to receive the award if even when I was yet to know the secondary school my parents would enrol me.

I DIDN’T BREACH THE PROMISE, MAKE A PROMISE TO YOURSELF TODAY.

By His grace and enablement, I didn’t breach the promise and everything became a reality year after year. Each time I look at the award in my room and the pictures, I remember the promise.

Maybe you are out there by the motivation of others, it can’t really get you far because you might be disappointed by those that you think are keeping going if you are not motivated yourself from within. If I had made such promise because of my parent and they refuse to fulfill theirs, I might give up.

I’m tired of speaking to young people who tell me, they are studying medicine because they promised their father to be a medical doctor even when they are late. You are still alive and you still haven’t promised yourself what you would demand from your life.

Enough of people being in a relationship because a close colleague suggested it for them but they personally have no reason or conviction.

Please stop that conquest if your aim of initiating it is only because you don’t want to disappoint one fellow who is not even responsible for his own life but desires you to be under his own lordship.

Don’t tell me you chose that career and ambition because you wanted to compete with someone who is not even aware of your intention.

Enough of folks starting up foundations because they think that is the only tool for reaching out to the masses with ulterior motives.

WHAT HAVE YOU PROMISED YOURSELF?

Being faithful to a promise requires a prize, it is a great tragedy to be faithful to a promise with a wrong intention. It requires hardwork, enthusiasm, consistency, commitment, thinking always and so on.

Reflect on major issues of your life today, make promises of what you desire as inspired by the God factor and be faithful to it.
