“And it came to pass, that as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples”- Luke 11:1

There is a way to touch heaven, there is a way to meeting the need of humanity; there is a way of changing the earth and getting the harvest. This was the only thing the disciples asked Jesus to teach them in the whole account of the New Testament. They saw Jesus heal the sick, cast out devils, fed thousands, preached powerful messages. They never asked Jesus to teach them how to preach or walk on water or cast out devils. They had observed Jesus on the mountain praying daily and at times some had the privilege to join him in prayer.

The secret of a great minister and ministry is a great prayer life”.

The disciples had been privileged to be sent out in Luke chapter 9 with power over diseases and unclean spirits. Also in Luke chapter 10, they were also sent out with power, they came back rejoicing. Demons and disease were subjected to them, they casted out devils, healed the sick. One day they ran into a challenge, someone came with a demon possessed child but they couldn’t cast it out until there master, Jesus came into the scene. Jesus came to their rescue by doing what they couldn’t do. They later asked Him “Why can’t we cast it out”, He said; “this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting”.

The disciples later had the privilege to ask Jesus to teach them something, they said; “teach us how to pray”. They realized that one of the secret to the exploits of Jesus’ ministry on earth was the ability to touch heaven by prayer.

Note in Luke 11:1, the passage says;

“As he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased…..”

They saw Jesus tapping into the resources of heaven in prayer, making contact with God and they concluded; “if you can teach us how to touch the throne of God, we can do what you do”. Jesus was changing the earth by touching heaven. He realized there was a great need on earth and the answer is in heaven.

Prayer is an acknowledgement of a need. If one is not praying that means one does not have a need. The need of humanity on earth is great therefore the requirement of touching heaven is also needed. To be prayer deficient is to be need deficient.

After Thought: have you prayed today? A believer who is not praying is playing. Touch the heaven on your knees and change the earth. No man is greater than his prayer life.

“All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any”- 1 Cor. 6:12.

Our liberty is in Christ, we are the called out. We are free from the corruption, wickedness, bondage and oppression of the world. Our liberty is not a license to sin despite the world beckoning to seduce us with her offer of worldliness, immorality and ungodliness.

“And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free”- John 8:32.

Genuine freedom is freedom from sin not freedom to sin, this freedom comes only by the truth; Jesus is the truth. The more of the truth we have, the more we are able to resist sin. One of the victories we acquire at new birth is victory over sin. We are changed from a slave to sin to a master of righteousness. Our DNA is been changed to that of Jesus whom the devil came to and found nothing in Him.

“We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not, but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not”- 1 John 5:18.

Our sonship in Christ is validated by “no sin life”; a life of absolute resistance of sin. It is our requirement as sons of God to keep ourselves and stay on guard resisting the pitfall of sin.

“Afterward, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee”- John 5:14.

Jesus gives us a liberty with a condition not to take it as a license to sin. There is a pitfall if we take our liberty for license. Jesus told the man from the text; “sin no more” though I have given you freedom but if you don’t want something worse than your previous state adhere to the instruction; “sin no more”.

“For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace”- Roman 6:14.

The text can be paraphrased as “sin should not be found in you because you are under the reign of grace”. So disappointing today that we take grace as a license to sin because we see it as being sufficient to clean up our mess. The real essence of grace is to make us absolutely free from sin without falling back into it. Grace is not a virtue that delights in us going back to our vomit.

“You have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin as Jesus did”- Heb. 12:4

It is better to shed blood than to yield to sin. No matter the pressure you are going through, it better to die than to sin. Remember, Jesus said; if it is our eyes that will make us sin, it is better to pluck it out having one eye to heaven than having both eyes in the torment of hell.

After thought: When someone looks at you and says; “it is well with you, I can see all over you the glory of the Lord” when you know that you are a secret sinner, that man has not seen anything. Do not be confused because of the fact that when you pray in tongues things happen though you are wallowing in sin. You may say “Yes, if sin actually is a problem why is God using me?” do not be deceived. The name of Jesus is credit worthy anytime.

“I am only a vessel that God is using to reveal His might and power”
“Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few”- 2 Kings 4:3.
While meditating on this caption in my closet, I saw in the spirit, a sign post in-printed on it with the blood of Jesus; “where are the empty vessels”. With a burning in my heart, I can’t but write the mind of God on this note. May our eyes may be open to the requirement of emptiness in our quest to fulfill the mandate of God on earth. Follow closely, precepts upon precepts; lines upon lines as we will be expounding the caption together and I strongly believe that the Holy Spirit will dissect the current state of your heart to see the blessedness of emptiness in our faith triumph.
Emptiness is a state of transparency of nothingness both to the observer (God) and the observed (we) which provokes a filling (reference Holy Ghostinary). It means a complete absence of pride, a complete absence of self-assurance and of self-reliance. It is consciousness that we are nothing in the presence of God. It is a tremendous awareness of our utter nothingness as we come face with God.
It is we looking for God in utter submission to Him and in utter dependence upon Him, His grace and mercy.
“The more emptiness you can present to God, the more of His fullness you can receive”
From the passage in 2Kings 4:1-7, the more the empty vessels the widow presented by the instruction of the prophet, the more they are been filled. Our filling from on high is in direct proportion to the level of our emptiness in the sight of God. God desires men that will present all the vessels of their life to him in adornment of His sovereignty. He desires our absolute dependency on Him by presenting our ministerial vessels, career vessels, academic vessels, marriage vessels, business vessels empty before Him so He can fill it up. He wants us to invite Him to our boat.
“God runs and owns a filling station that renders service only to empty tanks; God fills on the absolute”.
God does not desire you to bring your expertise, prowess or intellectual dexterity to him; He requires your nothingness so He can fill you up.
“And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full”- 2Kings 4:4.
Review of the text;
“When thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee…….”
Our emptiness is best presented to God in the closet, where no man can see us. God fills men in the secret place not in the open where all men can see you. You need to go to your inner chamber in earnest prayer, fasting and agony to present your emptiness. Your fullness in God should be seen when we appear before the congregation not your emptiness. Many people’s emptiness has been revealed while ministering with little or no anointing because they feel they are already full. They thought they don’t always need to pray to minister, they think they can approach and preach the word without waiting upon God. I have made it a burden upon myself never to minister without waiting earnestly upon the Lord for the anointing. No matter how short the notice is, the duration of the ministration, nature of ministration; I will never minister until I feel the anointing fresh in my spirit which is a product of me presenting my emptiness always to God before ministering.
“……thou shalt set aside that which is full”
As discussed earlier, “the more emptiness you can present to God, the more of His fullness you can receive”. Vessels that are full are set aside either for immediate use so that they can return for filling or they remain in the same level because they think they can remain full.
I can remember vividly some years ago while having a personal retreat with God as an undergraduate; I was feasting on Smith Wigglesworth late journals. From his diary, he said one of his favourites quote that made me remained hungry and thirsty for more of God was “BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT”. He said this made him desire God per time; he couldn’t be silence within the time interval of fifteen minutes with praying in tongues. While I was feasting alone in the room during the retreat praying for this requirement for perpetual filling from on high, I was caught up in a vision. The Lord showed me different ceramic mug kind of a bit bigger than the one we use to have around us. They were arranged to a source of flowing water; some were already full, some were overflow, some were still at the base, some were empty. I also discovered that the rate at which the water was flowing to the vessels were quite different; the water was flowing heavily into some and was dripping in drops to another. The Holy Ghost told me that is the way we are in the spirit. There are levels in the spirit (Ezekiel 47).
The biggest problem with most of us is that we’re already full; full of our own strength, our own ability, our own wisdom, our own insight, our own giftedness which means there is very little room left for God who should be the landlord. This is the reason God chooses weak, base, empty vessels because the He can pour His life. If we consider ourselves up to the task, God will strip, empty us out and drain us of our own resources. If we really want to follow God, He will bring us to the place where He strips us totally and completely of every capability in the natural, so that He can fill us with all the resources of Heaven.
“And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, THERE IS NOT A VESSEL MORE AND THE OIL STAYED”- 2Kings 4:6.
Notice from the text above; when there were no more vessels the oil stayed. This means that the measure of the anointing is in function with our emptiness. The anointing will not come until there is a vacuum to contain it.
”Instead of yelling; God anoint me rather cry God empty me”.
The moment you begin to draw from your own strength, your own resources, your own ability, that very moment; we are sending God a clear message that He is no longer needed and that we can handle things alone.
After Thought: God wants to pour His spirit into us, but we have to be empty. We’ve got to recognize this need. It is essential that we embrace this principle upon which to build our lives. We constantly need to recognize our utter dependency upon Him and Him alone.
Prayer: our prayer should be; “Lord, I don’t have but you do, Lord, here is my cup, fill it up”.
If you are one of those people who have been working in your own strength and ability, say, “Lord, I am tired of trying to do it my way; I want to learn to do it your way, I want to be like the pattern son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who could do nothing of Himself, who didn’t initiate a single thing. And Lord, I want to humble accept and proclaim the statement of Jesus in John 15:5 ‘apart from you, I can do nothing’”.
You can also read the follow up piece “spiritual beggar” on how you can long and thirst for this requirement.

Many of us crave to invest in businesses knowing pretty well that the return can help make a living. We put in our finance, time and expertise on business which might go bankrupt if success refuses to smile at us. Some prefer to invest their life on academics excellent because they think that is the opium to their achievement in life. Business can only make a better living but can’t make a better generation.

What we do for ourselves alone dies with us, what we do for others are timeless. Invest your time, knowledge, prowess, dexterity in people around you. There is a vacuum in the heart of the people around you; it needs to be filled up. Sow your words in them, create the image you want for yourself in the life of people.

I have been opportune many a time to speak with number of smokers, outcast, society derelicts and amongst others. I have found something in common; there is emptiness in them and a potential craving for expression. What they need is someone who can show them the standard and make them understand that they could be a better person.

There are hundreds of people on our streets, offices and so on that needs our attention. Be a life speaker, many are in the hospitals, orphanages, motel that our attention can transform. We all desire a change in the economy, government and the society but many of those that will be initiating these changes are lost in the ocean of depression. Let us cast out net to them, let us show love to them and invest in their lives.

You and I were created to help others. If you treat people as they are, they will remain the same. If you treat them as if they were what they could be, they can become what they could be. Practicing the golden rule is not a sacrifice; it’s an incredible investment. See the gold in people not the dirt because the dirt is not durable but the gold is.

“And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach”- Mark 3:14.

The opium of our being and having knowledge of Christ is to serve. He called us to himself with the aim of sending us to preach the gospel, disciple nations, raise more labourers in His vineyard and rescue the dying world from the oppression of the devil.

I want to stand before the Lord one day and hear Him say, “well done, thou good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21). Not every believer will hear that only those who have served, only those who have understood the will and the purpose of their Master and have given their lives to accomplish His purpose,

It is better for God to engage your life in something eternal than for you to be going up and down, doing trial and errors catching toads and frogs in the sea of this world. The only primary responsibility of a man that God will use is to be available when God needs him. Some are more known and active in church than in the presence of God. “To be much for God is to be much with Him”. Many follow men than they follow God all in the name of mentorship.

“The bedrock of Jesus Christ’s Kingdom is poverty, not possession, not decisions for Jesus Christ, but a sense of absolute futility- I cannot begin to do it. Then says Jesus, ‘Blessed are you’”- Oswald Chambers.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven”- Matthew 5:3.

A need arose for Jesus to impart the future apostles with an understanding of the principles of the kingdom. The beatitudes which comprise of the whole principles of the kingdom are likened to the keys to the kingdom (Matthew 5). Each key is needed to unlock the treasures of the kingdom but to get into it, the most essential is the first key. This core requirement is the blessedness of being poor in spirit to access the kingdom. Poor in the context is translated from the greek word “prochos” which means beggar. The text literally means blessed are the beggars, for theirs the kingdom of heaven”.

The requirement of being a beggar in this caption is not for us to be poor in material things because Christ has paid for our poverty and he has given us power to make wealth. It is bringing to our understanding the place of total dependency on the vine. Jesus said;

“I can do nothing on my own” (John 5:30).

After Jesus had the privilege of been baptized with the heaven opened and a voice to confirm His call. After the wilderness experience, returning in power, healing and delivering the oppressed. He said “I can do nothing on my own” meaning “I do not initiate a single thing”. “I am poor in taking decisions but rich in following my father’s direction”. Quoting from the text by  David Ravenhill;

“Many teachers today will tell you that if you can visualize a congregation of 1,000 people, then you can have it (poor Jesus apparently could only believe 12) no, He was totally dependent upon His father. He said, “whatever I hear the father say, that is what I say. Whatever I see my father doing, that’s what I do. I don’t do anything of My freewill” (see John 5). Basically He was saying “I don’t create anything, I listen. I’m totally dependent upon the father”.

Jesus was not visualizing, he was in total dependence upon God. The bible recorded that He prayed all night meaning He 12 hours to choose 12 disciples. He could not go out of the court of choosing disciples for himself; He had to inquire from His father. His father directed him to other beggars too that will be dependent upon Him. He was asked after praying to choose those that are poor in the spirit not those that think they have the wealth of understanding of the scriptures like the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

The secret of longevity and continued blessing in the Christian life is to remain in the place of absolute and total dependency upon God. Jesus told His disciples “apart from me, you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

“For I know that in me (that is in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing: For to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not”-Romans 7:18.

We must come to the conviction that we do not have any ability, apart from the grace of God to accomplish anything for the kingdom of God. Apostle Paul understood the essence of dependency.

This is the very first principle that Jesus gave concerning the kingdom of God. If we are to be a part of God’s kingdom, principle one is: “blessed are the beggars”. That we will not be ashamed to tell others that we are spiritual beggars. That we will not allow a day go by us without getting down on our face before God and lift up our tin cup, so to speak, and say “God give me of your wealth. Give me of your sustenance”. “if any man lacks wisdom, let him ask God” (James 1:5); available to the beggars are all heaven’s resources.

“…..who is adequate for these things?” (2Cor. 2:16).

Apostle Paul the successful apostle who said he has been called from his mother’s womb (Gal. 1:15). He was trained a Pharisee of Pharisees, circumcised, learnt under the greatest teacher of his days. He made known his spiritual pedigree yet he said “I am not capable, I am not sufficient to effectively minister the gospel of Jesus Christ but my sufficient is in God Himself”. Now if that is true about Apostle Paul, how much is it true for you and I?

After Thought: God seeks to bring us to this place of dependency on Himself. Until we see ourselves as beggars, we can’t access the wealth and resources of the kingdom.

What shall substitute this great requirement in the church, can pearls of intellectualism? nor glamorous philosophy, neither the tiara psychology. It abides in the altar of prayer, it evolves in the tent of meditation, it craves for expression and it makes grace available by the effectual working of power.

The key to unction is prayer and prayer is condition to spirituality, it is not heed to mental efficiency. One does not need to be spiritual to preach, that is to make and deliver sermon of homiletical perfection and exegetical exactitude. By a combination of memory, knowledge, ambition personality, plus well –line bookshelves, self-confidence and a sense of hearing arrived –brother the pulpit is yours almost anywhere to day. Preaching of the type mentioned affects men prayer affect God. Preaching affect time; prayer affects eternity. The pulpit can be a platform to display our talents; the closet speaks death to display.

“No erudition, no purity of diction, no width of mental outlook, no flower of eloquence, no grace of person can atone for lack of fire. Prayer ascends fire. Flame gives prayer access as well as wings, acceptance well as energy. There is no incense without fire, no prayer without flame ’’-E.M Bounds.

The tragedy of this late hour is that we have too many dead men in the pulpit giving out too man-dead sermons to too many dead people. There is a strange thing that I have seen under the sun even in the fundamental circles; it is preaching without unction.

What is unction? I hardly know but I know what it is not (or at least I know when it is not upon my own soul) preaching without unction kills instead of giving life. The word does not live unless the unction is upon the preacher. Dear preacher, with all thy getting –get unction.

Beloved, preaching is a spiritual business. A sermon born in the head reaches the head; a sermon born in the heart reaches the heart under God. A spiritual preacher will produce spiritually minded people. Unction cannot be learned, only earned –by prayer. Unction is God’s knighthood for the soldier-preacher who has wrestled in prayer and gained the victory. Victory is not won in the pulpit by firing intellectual bullets or wisecracks, but in the prayer closet; it is won or loss before the preacher’s foot enters the pulpit. When the hammer of logic and the fire of human zeal fail to open the story heart, unction will succeed.

“Bear up the hands that hang down, by faith and prayer, support the tottering knees. Have you any days of fasting and prayer? Storm the throne of grace and persevere their in, and mercy will come down” – John Wesley.

The ugly fact is that altar fires are either out or burning very low. The prayer meeting is dead or dying. By our attitude to prayer we tell God that what was began in the spirit we can finish in the flesh.

I have never come across any church who ask is candidating ministers what time they spend in prayer. Yet ministers who do not spend at least two hours a day in prayer are occupying spiritual offices.

Moreover, the devil has substituted reincarnation for generation, familiar spirits for the Holy Spirit, Christian Science for divine healing and the antichrist for the true Christ.

The modern-day strategies are invading the church, many preacher hearken to the principle do as I say and not as I do’’. Many are reading the scripture to speak and to display the talent of being eloquent without practicing the word. The true conviction is far from preacher today but they are quick to speak the word. Remember Luke6:46-48, “why call ye me Lord, Lord and do not the thing which I say.”

Where are our unctionized pulpit crusaders? Preachers who should be fishing for men are now too often fishing for compliment from men. Why are preachers so hungry for ministration instead of spiritual renewal? We may preach and perish, but we cannot pray and perish. If God called us to the ministry, then, dear brethren, I contend that we should get unctionized.

Man of God, don’t be so heavenly minded that you are of no earthly use likewise many are so earthly minded with no heavenly use. A preacher that loses kingdom focus lacks purpose. We can be church minded and not be kingdom minded. The time has come when men will rise to the call of duty and genuine stewardship.
